Alongside the incredible music, dance, and markets, the Irish and Celtic Music Festival is filled with special events that bring the community together and showcase our Celtic spirit.
From poetry readings and storytelling to lively dance performances, parades, and family activities, there’s always something unique to experience across the weekend. Check the program for dates, times, and venues so you don’t miss out!
Poetry at the Festival
Celebrate the rich tradition of Irish and Celtic poetry with readings and performances throughout the festival.
From heartfelt verses to lively storytelling, our poetry sessions capture the spirit, history, and humour of Celtic culture.
This year’s featured poets include Eric Purdie, Robyn Sykes, Lizz Murphy, Jason Roweth, Akka Ballenger Constantin, Oliver Roweth, Stonybroke and Luke Robinson, joined by Colin de Fries (last year’s Reciter of the Year and this year’s ROY judge).
Poetry Workshops, and Open Mic's will be held at the Performing Arts Centre (P.A.C.) - Mt Carmel School, Dutton Street.
Soiree, Poets Breakfasts and the Poets’ Farewell, which will be hosted at other venues.
Poetry Competition
The Irish and Celtic Music Festival proudly celebrates poetry through a series of fun and engaging competitions.
Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just starting out, there’s a stage for everyone!
Reciter of the Year Award
Judged across the Poets’ Breakfasts on Saturday (8–10am) and Sunday (8:30–10:30am).
The winner receives a free ticket to the next ICMF to return as judge, their name on the perpetual trophy, plus a take-home trophy.
(Note: Featured program performers are not eligible.)
Time limit: 8 minutes.
One Minute Wonder
Sunday, 1:30–3pm at Lovat Chapel.
Put your creativity to the test! Write a poem over the weekend using the set topic words (available at all poetry events from Friday), then present it in one minute or less.
Winner: Decided by audience acclamation.
Prizes awarded.
Poetry Teams Event
Saturday, 3–4pm at Mt Carmel Performing Arts Centre.
Locals vs Visitors, showcasing local junior talent.

U18 Open Mic
Saturday, 2–3pm at Mt Carmel Performing Arts Centre.
Open mic for ages 5–18 — all styles welcome.

Junior Upper Primary/Early Secondary School Spoken Word Workshop

Oliver Roweth (he/it) presents a workshop on writing and performing free verse poetry. Learn to play with words outside the boundaries of rhyming verse and stretch structure to express yourself freely.
For ages 10-15.

Workshop Eric Purdie: Where is the Glasgow I used to Know
Mt Carmel Performing Arts Centre
In this workshop Eric Purdie imparts a unique view of a life and culture through story, poetry and songs, collected over many years. It is not a story about kilts, views and shortbread, it is a story about the hard reality of growing up in the heart of Industrial post war Scotland.

One Minute Wonders Poetry Competition
Write a poem over the weekend, which must include the words ‘Yass, Celtic, Poetry’.

The Irish and Celtic Music Festival offers so much more than music and poetry.

Irish dancing, or watch the next generation shine at the
Junior Fleadh, showcasing young musicians, singers, and dancers. Explore the beauty of the
Irish language through conversation sessions accompanied by live music, or take part in hands-on
workshops to learn new skills in music, dance, and cultural traditions.
